Melbourne was the original capital of Australia until Canberra was constructed.

Today Melbourne is seen as the the sporting capital of Australia, if not the world. Some of the more popular sports in Melbourne are AFL (Australia Rules Football), Cricket and Netball. But now hosting a rugby league team (Melbourne Storm) and soccer team (Melbourne Victory), Melbourne are quite happy to jump on those sports too. Some other big sporting events in Melbourne annually are the Melbourne Cup (horse racing), Australian Open (tennis) and Grand Prix (car racing).
